5.0 out of 5 stars. Outstanding waterproof jacket for extreme wet weather.

Everything about this jacket excels. Here's a brief overview of my experience so far.

FIT: In a word, perfect. I'm an athlete at 5' 10", 142 pounds. Size small fits exactly as I expected - not too tight like some climbing oriented jackets, but definitely not loose. I can comfortably wear a Patagonia Piton and NanoPuff Hoody underneath without restricting my movement. When I don't need the insulation, the Wildfire still fits well without feeling loose. It is helmet compatible, for the few people who need that. Most of us don't and just want a hood that cinches down well and keeps the elements out. The Wildfire's hood does exactly that. This jacket is a little longer than most, especially in the back, which works great for keeping me a little extra dry. Might not work so well with a climbing harness, but I haven't tested it.

WATERPROOFNESS: Oh yes, and plenty of it. Even after an hour hike in moderate rain with a twenty pound pack, not a drop came in. When standing on the summit and getting pelted with heavy, wind-driven rain, I never noticed any moisture making it past the eVent fabric. I previously owned a higher end Arc'Teryx Gore-tex Pro that couldn't keep the rain out in tough conditions, mostly due to the lack of waterproof zippers. No problem for the Wildfire. This is serious protection and I have yet to find its equal.

BREATHABILITY: So far, this is the most breathable jacket I've used. Better than Patagonia H2No, and better than my Arc'Teryx Gore-tex Pro. My Marmot MemBrain jacket comes close, but can't quite match the Wildfire.

DURABILITY: Although I've only owned it for a few weeks, I've noticed no wear from my backpack, rocks, branches, etc. It still looks like new despite being used reasonably hard. As always, time will tell.

FUNCTIONALITY: The hood adjusts easily and cinches down well. It can be easily rolled up when not needed. The minimal cuff closures are great at staying out of the way and can be operated with gloves. The zippers are a little sticky, as are any waterproof zippers, but they work reliably. The dedicated and generous pit zips vent well. Three pockets on the front can hold a reasonably amount of gear and are also protected with waterproof zippers. There is also a small, internal zippered pocket. The kissing welt on the collar keeps it comfortable on long hikes. The cinch cord at the bottom works the same as most and I haven't had to use it in snow yet.

I'm trying to think of something I would change about this jacket and nothing really comes to mind. At full retail price, it's a deal and I wouldn't hesitate. By comparison, my Arc'Teryx jacket cost much more and doesn't perform as well in extreme conditions. If you can get your hands on a Wildfire in your size, I highly recommend it.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Upside-down zipper pull

Wanted an eVent jacket like this SO much. Wish I could comment further, but returning due to defective front (main) zipper. Other than the zipper, very much promised to be everything I was looking for. Size L fit my 160lb 5'7 torso nicely with room to spare for good layering. Bummed.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Rock Solid Lowe Alpine Wildfire 3L Jacket

Lowe Alpine makes quality gear and this jacket is no exception. For those familiar with the Arcteryx Beta LT, this jacket is a close second. It is made of excellent materials and I would give it the edge with regards to the waterproof zippers since it also has a storm flap. The Arcteryx Beta LT (and some others) are susceptible to horizontal wind and rain penetration (i.e. strong winds or storms). I tested the Wildfire in moderate to heavy winds and rains for an hour or two and it held up nicely as I stayed completely dry. However, the Wildfire jacket does not have that great trim fit like an Arcteryx jacket which is why I give Arcteryx fit and overall design the edge. That being said, it is less expensive and I see myself probably using it more for rugged excursions than my Arcteryx jackets. The Wildfire looks stylish and it also looks like it would stand up to some serious abuse. Plus, I love the helmet compatible hood design, pit zips, and think the jacket will withstand backpack abuse quite nicely. So I can spare my beautiful Arcteryx gear from a little extra wear and tear. Yeah, a touch narcissistic I suppose... Anyway, I'm 5'11", approx. 180 lbs., 42R, 16" neck, 33-35" sleeves, and 34" waist and a medium works out well, allowing a decent midlayer such as the Arcteryx Atom LT or Nuclei. The Wildfire has an alpine fit (yet the torso is a bit looser to accommodate bigger midsections) but I wouldn't wear it with a large, puffy, down midlayer. If you wanted to go with thicker layers, maybe size up... Anyway, I ordered 2 Wildfire jackets so that tells you how I feel about the jacket...

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Zipper on wrong side

I just got this jacket in the mail. I ordered it because I had an older mountaineering jacket from Lowe Alpine that I bought 15 years ago. I loved that jacket. It lasted for years. This one has the zipper on the wrong side, is that a British thing. I'll deal with that, the jacket is really nice. I may need to go with a 2xl. I wear XL in everything from the US, Arcteryx, Marmot, Mtn. Hardwear, North Face, etc. But this seems just a tad small. I may try the 2xl, I like to have a lot of room for layering and movement.

I got this jacke because of the EVent fabric, but alpine fit maybe a little tight for me, I may need to order the next size up. It is a beautiful simple jacket!
