I use this for hiking in cooler weather and just general wear-about when its too warm for a jacket but not warm enough for just a shirt. I appreciate the large pockets front and rear - easy to carry water bottles for you and dog(s) in the back cargo pockets.
A few notes - the vest is styled as a classic gameskeeper vest, with suede patches that look like recoil pads and large rear pockets. However, there is no actual padding at the shoulders and the back pockets are not lined so if you actually shot a bird or rabbit and stowed it there, it would make a mess! The vest is not designed to substitute as a zip-in liner for other Barbour garments; at least it was not compatible with my Classic Beaufort (the longer of the two classic Barbour coats); but it nevertheless fits fine under that coat. Finally, as the photo and description clearly indicates this vest fits long - well below the waist; note this if you would consider layering this vest under other outerwear. For example, I think the vest would show below the bottom of a coat such as the Barbour Bedale.
The generous pockets do not have flaps (the rear pockets each have a snap closure though), but are deep enough that, unless you are running an obstacle race in this (not recommended) your items should not fall out. -
3.0 out of 5 stars. hunting vestVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from california coast on Monday, March 7, 2016this is Barbour in a traditional mood, hence real leather patches, not vegan. also, the fit is roomy. really, this is a hunter's vest, which explains the amazing huge pocket on the lower back. i really didn't like the brown knit fabric around the v-neck so i did the unthinkable and ripped it out. then i took off the leather patches because i won't be firing a shotgun any time soon. it was sacrilege, but i like it better my way. still an odd garment, but warming and well-built, with double-ended zip.
